K by Kelly Rowland – EP Review

Kelly Rowland’s 2021 EP titled K marks the end of a seven year hiatus from solo releases for the Grammy-award winning artist. The style of this latest music has its own distinct bass-heavy bounce to it, but doesn’t stray too far from the “Talk a Good Game” Kelly Rowland of 2013.

The opener, “Flowers”, is a slow, moody synth and piano ballad which sets the tone for the rest of the EP. We move to “Black Magic”, a catchy trumpet carnival masterpiece released as the second single to commemorate Kelly Rowland’s 40th birthday. “Hitman”, released in November last year as part of the Songs of the Season campaign by NFL, maintains the upbeat party momentum and features Kelly wearing a golden chainmail headdress amidst a party dance battle.

“Crazy” is a light-hearted but honest reflection on love and relationships in which we are treated to some truly spectacular vocals in the chorus, with a funky bassline and piano accompaniment. “Speed of Love” signals a change in pace and mood, like walking through a forest glade as we hear birds singing and water gently trickling in the background. The lyric “love should be water flowing / through a quiet hill” perfectly encapsulates the track’s unplugged feel.

The final track, “Better”, finishes off with an off-beat steel-drum ballad continuing the themes of love and fidelity which are present throughout the whole EP.
